Compose Preferences This window allows you to define several items unique to message composition and delivery. Selecting Accept applies the current values to the current Compose Window. It does not affect any other windows. Selecting Save saves the current values in your Preferences file, which then are applied to all outgoing messages in the future. Dismiss closes the window and discards any changes you have made. Mail Delivery Server The name of the server which will deliver your e-mail messages. If in doubt, "localhost" is usually a valid option, and will deliver via the local delivery system. You may wish to instead send through your Internet Service Provider's or mail server's SMTP service. News Delivery Server This is the name of the machine which will deliver news messages. It should be set to a valid NNTP server. Default Address Domain When you enter an address with no hostname component, the program will fill it in using the value supplied here. By default, it will be set to the name of the Mail Delivery Server. Many organizations define a "mail domain" name which applies to all members of the organization, and which is not attached to a physical machine. If your organization uses such a naming scheme, enter the appropriate domain name here. My Return Address By default, your return address on outgoing messages is set to your account name on the machine running this program. You may wish instead for such mail to get routed to your organization's primary mail server. Enter your "official" mail address here, if that is the case. Signature File The name of the file (relative to your home directory on the system running this program), which contains your "signature", usually a few lines giving yout organization, title, or other information. This file is not included in the message by default, but you may specifically add it before sending the message via the "Send" menu. Fcc: Mailbox Name The name of the mailbox to log outgoing messages, if you have this option enabled. This mailbox is located on the local system unless you prefix it with the name of a known configuration pointing to an IMAP server followed by a colon. Example: podunk:+OUTBOX Appends the message to the file OUTBOX located in your default folder on the IMAP server identified by the configuration name "podunk". Default Cc: Address An address or addresses to add to all outgoing messages. Usually used to automatically include a copy to yourself of all outgoing mail. Default Bcc: Address An address or addresses to add to the Bcc: field of all outgoing messages. In some cases, this may be set to an archive file on the Mail Delivery Server, which is another means of logging outgoing messages besides the Fcc: Mailbox. Default Character Set In Europe or other places which use a richer character set than US-ASCII (i.e. accented characters), use this to define an alternate character set such as ISO-8859-1. If your message does not contain any such accented characters, this setting will be ignored. Default Language It is usually not neccessary to supply this. If you have such needs, you will know what to set it to. Option Toggles Verbose Delivery When this is set, the transactions with the delivery mail system are logged to the System Messages Window. This sometimes lets you ascertain which address failed in a long list of recipients. Keep Window Open By default, when a message is successfully delivered, the Compose Window is closed, and the message removed from memory. Setting this allows you to use the same message over again, and make minor changes in order to send almost the same message to other addresses. 8-bit Transport This tells the program that you are able to use extended mail delivery service, and do not need to encode outgoing messages which contain accented characters. Do not use this in the U.S. At delivery time, the program will check that this service is indeed available, and will fall back to the normal transport (and encode any message contents appropriately) if it is not. Word Wrap Editor By default the message text editor is word-wrapped, so that long lines will automatically be "folded" at word boundaries. If you turn this off, it is possible to send longer lines of text, but means you must press [return] at the end of each line. Caution is advised when using this, as many recipients will not be able to read messages containing lines of more than 80 characters. However, this may be the only means of entering a long e-mail address to a mail-based list server without breaking it up. Log to Fcc: Mailbox If you have defined an Fcc: Mailbox, this enables or disables the logging of outgoing message to it. Log Attachments By default, only your text message and headers are logged to the Fcc: Mailbox. This allows you to log all outgoing attachments as well, but may cause problems if your disk space is limited.
