Composing Messages From the compose window, you may create messages to send. These may be to persons, mailing lists, or to newsgroups. You may also include file attachments. If using the program for the first time, please select "Configure" from the Option menu to check/set your default address and delivery settings. All messages require a recipient. This generally goes in the "To" field of the messaage, but the "Cc" (Carbon Copy) field may also be used. Multiple addresses should be separated by commas. The recipient is an e-mail address, generally of the form "account@host.domain". To send a message to a newsgroup, click the "To" button. The field will be changed into a "Newsgroups" field. The contents of the "To" field will be remembered, and you may toggle back and forth freely. The same goes for the "Cc" button, which toggles between "Cc" and "Bcc" (Blind Carbon Copy). Addresses in the Bcc field are not displayed to any other person receiving the message. Use this if you want somebody to see a message without alerting other recipients that they have received it. The "Subject" button generates a random, ocassionally humorous subject line if your system is so configured. The "Newsgroups" line may contain ONLY newsgroup names (such as "alt.test". The "To", "Cc", and "Bcc" fields may contain ONLY e-mail addresses (not newsgroups). If you have entered both an e-mail address (in an appropriate field) AND a newsgroup name (in the Newsgroup) field, the message will be delivered twice. First to the newsgroup, and then delivered by mail to the aditional recipients. The address fields support inclusion of entries from the address book. To use this feature, type enough characters of the Name part of an address book entry to make it unique, then hit [Tab] to fill in the complete Address for you. Text Editing Keys Note that this mapping applies to most every text input window in the program. On some systems, you may need to use the "Alt" key or some other key instead of "Meta", which isn't supported on all keyboards. Some window systems further restrict you to using either the "left" or the "right" Alt key but not both. Please check you system documentation if you can't find the correct key to use. Ctrl A: beginning-of-line Ctrl B: backward-character Ctrl D: delete-next-character Ctrl E: end-of-line Ctrl F: forward-character Ctrl H: delete-previous-character Ctrl K: delete-to-end-of-line Ctrl S: search-text Ctrl W: cut-clipboard Ctrl Y: paste-clipboard Ctrl-/: hex-input (use only if your charset is other than US-ASCII) Meta B: backward-word Meta D: delete-next-word Meta W: copy-clipboard Meta Left: backward-word (*) Meta Right: forward-word (*) Meta BackSpace: delete-previous-word Meta Delete: delete-next-word Ctrl N: next-line Ctrl P: previous-line Ctrl V: next-page Meta V: previous-page (*) Try Ctrl instead of Meta (or Alt) if this doesn't do the right thing. The Meta + [cursor-key] sequence is trapped occasionally by window managers. File Menu: Load Draft Loads a file containing a message draft you have previously saved. Save Draft Saves your current composition to a file. This function does NOT save message attachments -- only the header fields and text of the message. Print Send the header and text portions of the current message to the system printer. Insert File Insert a text file at the current cursor position. Address Book View or change your personal address book. Note Book View or change your personal note book. Close Window Close the Compose Window. This will destroy the current message in progress. Edit Menu: Cut Delete selected (highlighted) text from the text window, and place it in the Clipboard. Copy Make a copy of of the selected (highlighted) text from the text window, placing it in the Clipboard. Paste Insert the current Clipboard contents at the current cursor location in the text window. These may have been placed there through "Cut" or "Copy" operations from this or other ML windows, or other Motif toolkit applications running on this display. Spell Check Applies the system spelling checker to the message composition and allows you to correct mis-spelled or unknown words. This only works on systems which use "/bin/spell" as the system spelling checker. Attachments Allows you to attach files to the current message. An attachment window shows what attachments you have added. If you have selected a Multipart attachment in this window, and create a new attachment, it will become a "child" of the multipart. Otherwise, attachments are added linearly to the current message. To remove an attachment, select it before selecting "Delete Attachment". "Create Attachment" uses a list of known program (supplied by you or your system administrator) which create attachments of a given type. This may be used to include "live" screen snapshots, for instance. Double clicking an attachment in the attachment list window will invoke an attachment viewer, if one is properly configured for this type of attachment. See the Main Window Help menu for information on configuring attachment handlers. Option Menu: Configure Brings up another window which sets all of your delivery configuration information. It also contains several options which may be set or changed for a particular message without affecting your stored system defaults. Set Parameters (Advanced). Allows you to set and change the key, value information pairs in the Content-Type field for a particular attachment. Select the attachment before using. If none is selected, the parameters will be set for the primary text attachment (your message). Send Menu: Deliver Deliver message. If delivery fails, the window and current message will remain open, and an alert will be posted to the System Information window; which will be popped-up if it is currently obscured. With Signature File If you have a "Signature File" configured, the contents of that file will be appended to the message prior to delivery. Shortcut Buttons: Insert File Insert a text file into the text window at the current cursor location. Attach File Shortcut to the Attach File function in the Edit->Attachments menu. Attaches a single file. If the file type is recognized, you will not need to specify the attachment type. Otherwise, you will be asked to choose from the various attachment types available. Insert Text Not available in main menu. Inserts the contents of the current message you are replying to, if this message is a reply. The message will be indented appropriately. If you have text selected (highlighted) in any open Read Window, that text will be inserted instead. Deliver Shortcut to the Deliver function in the Send menu. Cancel Shortcut to the Close Window function in the File menu. Destroys the current message and closes the window. By default, you will be asked to confirm this action. This may be turned off by editing the "confirmDestroy" option in your preferences file before the program starts. It is not available from any of the configuration menus.
