The Read Window The Read Window is where you view or perform operations on a single message, as opposed to the Main Window, which may operate on multiple messages. Another distinction is that the Read Window has the ability to interpret multipart and attached messages, and perform operations on individual parts of messages. All messages have at least one part (part 1). The title of the window indicates the number of the Main Window from whence this message came, the message subject, and the current part number. Each virtual mailbox is allowed at least one unique Read Window for its use. Selecting additional messages from that virtual mailbox for reading will "queue" the message in the primary Read Window assigned to it (re-use the window). The queue is emptied by selecting Dismiss or File->Close Window or individual messages may be removed from the list by using the "Next +" or "Delete +" convenience buttons. If you have selected multiple messages for reading, they are all queued, with only the current message appearing in the Read Window. By using the window navigation buttons "Prev", and "Next" from the top menu, you may move between these selected messages. The "Next +" button in the row of convenience buttons has a different effect. It will also select the next message in a queue of multiple messages, but when this list is exhausted (or if you have only selected an individual message to read), it will read the next message from the mailbox or virtual mailbox from whence the current message came. If you reach the end of the mailbox or virtual mailbox, the Read Window will close. The window is divided into three sections. The message header, the part list, and the message body. The part list may be used to select and/or display file attachments. By selecting a part in the part list, it will become the current part, and if the contents are text, or if the contents are encoded, but can be decoded as text, it will be displayed as text. Double-clicking a part in the part list will invoke the "handler" or helper application for that particular attachment type. Handlers may be configured for your system to display, for example, images, by invoking a program to display them. A few attachment types are handled internally, such as text/PLAIN, message/EXTERNAL-BODY, and all forms of type multipart. If you have no handlers configured for a particular type, you will be allowed to save the attachment to a file. Message attachments of type message/RFC822 are handled differently than all others. Selecting an attachment of this type will display that message as a new message and as if it were an entirely different message from the one you are currently reading. The title bar in this case will contain the text [rfc822] next to the part number display to let you know it is now functioning in a different message context. Use the window navigation selections (described below) to return to the previous message context. These messages may have their own attachments which would not be visible from the parent message; and which will be shown in the child display. In the following, notes apply to various operations depending on whether they deal with -- (E) the entire message, (P) the current part, or (N/A) not applicable to message structure. For simple text messages with no attachments, there is no difference in behaviour. Menu operations: File Menu View Attachment (P) If an attachment has been selected, this will launch the handler for that attachment type or allow you to save it to a file. This may also be performed by double-clicking the attachment. This has no effect on attachments of type multipart, which are merely ``containers'' for other attachments. Attachments of type text/PLAIN are provided a separate viewing window; even if the contents were visible already. Extract Attachment (P) If an attachment has been selected, this will save it directly to a file, without going through the viewer selection process. MIME encoded parts will be decoded before saving. Copy To Mailbox (E) Copy the entire message to a named mailbox. Print (P) Send the current message part to the system printer. Save To File (P) Save the current message part to a file on the local system. This function saves the current text contents of the Read Window, and does not otherwise decode MIME attachments. Use Extract Attachment for that purpose. Pipe To Command (P) Execute a shell command with the selected message part as input. Follow Web Link (P) If the message part contains a Uniform Resource Locator, this will invoke a program to view that document via the World Wide Web. The first URL in the message is initially selected. You may over-ride this selection by highlighting a URL before selecting this function. Sorry, it doesn't work for URL's in the message header. You can get around this by selecting anything, and then replacing it with text pasted in from the header after invoking this function. This all depends on your preferences setting for URL View Program, which is invoked to display the actual document. Address Book (N/A) View or change your personal address book. Note Book (N/A) View or change your personal note book. Close Window (N/A) Close this window. Edit Menu Select All Text (P) Select (highlight) the entire contents of the text display window for use with the Clipboard. Copy (P) Copy the current selected (highlighted) text from the text display window to the Clipboard, for use in the Compose Window "Paste" function, or for use in other compatible applications running on this display. Dismiss & Next (E) This is the same as the "Next" convenience button. If the current message was queued from a list, it is removed from the queue, and then advances to either 1) the next message in the read queue, without changing the highlight state of the original mailbox or virtual mailbox; or 2) the next message from the mailbox or virtual mailbox which the current message came from, and changing the selection state of that mailbox or virtual mailbox to select the now current message; and delecting any other selections. If the last message in the mailbox or virtual mailbox is reached, close the Read Window. Trash & Next (E) Same as Dismiss & Next except that the message is also marked DELETED. Set Flags (E) Set various system flags, such as "deleted", "flagged", "seen", and "answered" on the selected messages. Clear Flags (E) Undo various system flags settings. Option Menu Full Header (E*) Display the full message header for this message. (*) If a parent of the message part is of type message/RFC822, the header will come from that message part instead of the original message. Short Header (E*) Display only the "short" message header containing from, to, subject, and date, or other headers defined in your preferences. (*) See preceding note. To Address Book (E*) Add an entry to your personal address book consisting of the person who sent this message. You will be prompted for a Name to call the entry. (*) See preceding note. Compose Menu Compose New Message (N/A) Create a message to send. Reply to ... (E) Reply to either the sender or all recipients of this message. Forward (E) Include this message in a new message. Remail (E) Remail this message to another address. Window Navigation Commands Prev Move to the previous message in the read queue. Next Move to the next message in the read queue. Delete Delete the current message without advancing to another message. Convenience Buttons Next + Same as Edit->Dismiss & Next. Advance to the next message in the queue. Highlight state of the orignating virtual mailbox is unchanged. If the queue is exhausted, advance to the next message in the virtual mailbox from which the current message originated and change the highlight state such that the current message is highlighted in that virtual mailbox. If the last message in the virtual mailbox has been reached, close the Read Window. Delete + Same as Edit->Trash & Next, or "Next +" except the current message is marked DELETED before advancing.
